If you don’t make a plan, you plan to fail. I whole heartedly believe in that statement, but what happens when things don’t go as planned? I’ve heard many say, you fail forward, but why do you have to count it as a failure, if things don’t go your way the first, second or even sometimes twentieth time, you only fail when you stop trying.
I have heard the calls of “failing forward”, and have even had that as my mantra. But what constitutes failing? The dictionary defines failure as, the lack of success. The possibility of my success is still there, I haven’t stopped, I haven’t quit. Success is still on my horizon, your success is inevitable if you continue to push forward.
Life is full of detours. Some make you stronger, some make you adjust your goals and priorities. Just because you have a bump in the road or maybe that road has closed, how will adjust and move forward? I have come across many people and even I have had many times where I hit that detour and felt like things were going to fall apart. It is important that we treat those changes, those little turns off of our desired path as the detours that they are.
The path that we take in life is almost never straight. With our goals in mind though, we can see it through to the end. I could say that having those detours on my journey has built me up for what it is that I will face once I get to my goal.
The path to my career was not made up of a straight path. I started college early, had the major that I thought was going to take me where I wanted to go in life. I took time off from college, changed my major couple time and when it was all said and done, I changed my career path again. I knew I wanted have a career that was impactful, that was my goal. Keeping my goal in mind, helped me to get to the right position, which has helped me to fulfill my goals. Though I took what seemed to be a long winding road of failures, actually prepared me for the career I have now.
You may not see it now, but each and every pitfall, bump or detour to your final destination, has prepared you for what will come next and shapes the way that handle yourself when you have accomplished that goal. You are learning, you are perfecting, you are answering the challenge. Failure only comes when you quit in the middle of the quest to reach your goal.
Warning, detours may be ahead; fasten your seatbelt, adjust, pivot, turn, but keep on moving till you have arrived at your destination. The journey will be worth it, so…Get Caryed Away!
